-- as you pointed out, i help the pro obama super pac. and these are the two narratives on romney we're trying to push. first, that he doesn't care about the middle class. well, thanks for the help, mitt. in the latest cnn poll, by the way, before this gaffe, president obama had a 20-point lead over mitt romney in the question of who is more in touch with the concerns of the middle class. so it hurts there, hurts on the second front. there's a tax policy study that the democrats have been pushing, president clinton referred to it in his convention speech in charlotte. and it says in order to give big tax cuts for the rich, mitt romney's going to have to raise taxes on the middle class. well, when you're claiming to wealthy people that 47% of americans don't pay federal income tax, i think a lot of those people, retirees, working class folks are going to listen to that and think, gee, i guess the democrats are right, i guess he does want to raise taxes on the middle class in order to help the rich. this helps the democrats in two important ways. >> ari, it's not just someone like paul

of president obama burned in afghanistan today and we've seen things like that in other places like egypt. were the attacks at the base and helmand province related? >> we asked the headquarters there in afghanistan and they said right now, it's just too early to tell on this particular attack. he did say there were no organized protests outside the base proceeding the attack and i've been to that base several times. it's in the middle of nowhere. there are no large communities next to the base, but again, there have been demonstrations in afghanistan, still a little early to tell whether the video may have been a cause to spur this attack. >> thank you very much. reporting on that news from the pentagon and also, breaking news in sudan. a team of marines is now en route to the cal tall, khartoum. they are going to defend the embas embassy. the scene spread beyond the u.s. embassy, mobs attacked the british and german embassies and sudan was one of my countries as violence spread around the world today. the uprisings from spread from morocco to india. we saw protests, i mean, this is incredible

's goal in this campaign was to make it a referendum on obama. obama's goal was to make it a choice and oddly now it's become a referendum on romney. all the focus now is on romney and who he is. now, the upside for that for romney is he has an opportunity to reveal his vision, his goals, his policies in a way that we really haven't heard before because i think now he realizes and the campaign realizes that it can't just be a referendum on obama, that he now has to fill in the story, and that's got to be part of their strategy now. >> gloria, this talk about his father just doesn't feel like damage control. it seems like the latest example of something they've tried to do at the conventions to make the governor seem more relatable, like someone who isn't totally insulated fromhe problems of ordinary people. doesn't it? >> yeah. i mean, that's their real problem, and if you look at the numbers, wolf, it's kind of unsustainable for them. they have to turn this around, which is that by a three-to-one margin according to some polls, voters believe that president obama better understands

marines to help guard the mbembassy in tripoli. the obama administration is trying to determine if the deadly attack against the u.s. consulate in benghazi was a planned terror strike or a spontaneous backlash from the anti-islamic video posted on youtube. four americans were killed in the attack including 52-year-old ambassador chris stevens, widely regarded as one of the most popular and successful american envoys in the region. according to first reports from senior administration officials, the american consulate came under small-arms fire around 10:00 p.m. local time. a short time later, the outside walls of the lightly guarded compound were breached. gunmen began attacking the main building, setting it on fire. at this point three people remained inside the main consulate. ambassador stevens, another staff member named sean smith and a security officer. amid the chaos and heavy smoke, the three became separated. ambassador stevens was missing for 12 hours before his body was located on wednesday morning in a benghazi hospital. apparently transported there by libyan police.
